What is a "pregnancy nose"? We explain whether the nose really changes during pregnancy.
Most likely, if you're expecting, you've seen posts about "pregnancy nose." But do pregnant women's noses really change?
What is "pregnancy nose"?
Women typically refer to the gradual enlargement (or lack thereof) of the nose when they post about a "pregnancy nose" on social media. However, what is the reason of this phenomenon?
Gynecologists claim that pregnancy causes numerous alterations to the nose. In actuality, the nasal tissues enlarge as a result of the blood arteries in the nose relaxing and dilatation to increase blood flow due to the rise in estrogen levels during pregnancy.
Pregnancy-related nasal changes can also cause:
- Increased congestion
- Nosebleeds
- Inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes (pregnancy rhinitis)
- Increased mucus production
Does "pregnancy nose" happen to every pregnant?
No, not every expectant mother experiences it. This is due to the fact that every woman's body reacts slightly differently to changes in hormones. Your nose will return to normal after giving delivery if you do have a bigger nose during pregnancy.
Can we avoid “pregnancy nose”?
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is usually a good idea and can help you feel better throughout your pregnancy, even though "pregnancy nose" cannot be avoided.
To keep the air in your nasal passages moist, doctors advise putting petroleum jelly to the base of your nostrils and using a humidifier at night if you frequently get nosebleeds. Lean forward and breathe through your mouth for ten minutes while tightly pinching your nose right above the nostrils if you get nosebleeds. Nosebleeds and any other nasal swelling or inflammation can also be relieved with a cold compress wrapped in a towel. Just use it a few times during the day for 15 minutes.
