BABY WEIGHT BY MONTH: FROM BIRTH TO 12 MONTHS
Baby Weight by Age
During his first year of life, baby gains a lot of weight. The many pediatric consultations follow one another and are an opportunity to follow his growth. Your baby's weight curve gradually appears on his health record. Find out how to read these graphs, and baby's weight month by month, from birth to 1 year.
FOLLOW BABY'S WEIGHT MONTH BY MONTH
During his first year of life, baby gains a lot of weight. At 12 months, he will have approximately tripled his birth weight! Monitoring his growth is essential to ensure his proper development.
WEIGHING DURING BABY'S PEDIATRIC EXAMS
The pediatric follow-up of the infant includes clinical examinations throughout the first year of life. The pediatrician or general practitioner will check the baby's height, his head circumference, but also examine the senses (hearing, sight, etc.) as well as observe certain reflexes. Of course, the weighing of the baby undressed and without diaper will be systematically carried out:
- At birth,
- During the in-depth clinical examination during the 8 days following birth. This is when a first mandatory medical certificate is established,
- During the 4 follow-up examinations carried out until the baby is 2 months old. They are scheduled during the 2nd week, before the end of the 1st month, at the 1st month and at the 2nd month.
- During subsequent follow-up examinations: at 3 months, 4 months, 5 months, then at 8 months with the establishment of a 2nd mandatory health certificate, 11 months, and 12 months.
All these weighings are compiled in the baby's health record, to be kept carefully and presented at each new medical appointment.
THE INFANT WEIGHT CURVE
The baby health record includes weight graphs on which are reported the weighings carried out during pediatric follow-up examinations.
These graphs are different depending on the sex of the child: there is one for girls and another for boys. In the center, you will notice a continuous line marked M: this is the median curve. These are the values above and below which the weight of half of French children is respectively located according to their age.
Around this median, a zone of variability is identified by a lighter color than on the rest of the graph: 94% of French children are located in this interval. Do not be alarmed if a weighing does not fall within this interval, this does not mean that a growth problem will be detected. Baby can perfectly well grow regularly and develop well with a weight curve parallel to the standard curves of the health record.
On the other hand, a "break" in the curve can be a warning. It could materialize a sudden drop in the child's weight. The opinion of a specialist is often necessary.
Each child is different and the evolution of the growth curve will be studied in its entirety by the pediatrician. This specialist doctor will be your privileged contact regarding the monitoring of the infant's growth, and is authorized to detect or rule out growth problems.
