Toddler Friendly Holidays at Christmas

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and arranged a family ‘get away from it all’ Christmas break… but now is dawning on you exactly what you will be ‘away from’ and are wondering how you’ll transport the ‘family Christmas at home’ experience to another country!?

Here are our top 10 tips for family friendly holidays at Christmas, to make sure you all have a wonderfully relaxing trip…

1. Involve your kids in the travel experience. Get out a map and point out where the family will be staying. Talk about how many kilometres you are travelling – just like Santa Claus himself! Let your kids help pack their suitcases and even shop for Christmas gifts for family members with whom you’ll be holidaying.

2. Make sure they leave a note at home ensuring Santa knows of their temporary location so he can be sure to find them on Christmas Eve. If Santa is not able to hop down the chimney, let the kids leave suggestions as to an alternative way for their delivery. And of course, remember to leave out a little tipple and a mince pie (or maybe a local equivalent!) at your journey’s end. He’s sure to be hungry after the extra trip from your home!

3. Find out whether the bigger online retailers deliver to your destination. You can even get presents gift wrapped. Just remember to plan for how you’ll get them home! Perhaps try to keep a spare case or fold away bag empty and keep the family’s luggage down (at least you won’t usually need swimming gear at this time of year!) Try to plan gifts that are small and lightweight to pack.

4. If you can’t bring all the gifts, talk about how kids in Europe receive theirs on Epiphany instead. Maybe Santa will accommodate your travel plans and leave smaller than normal packages, or perhaps leave some but with a note that there are still some more surprises waiting at home under the tree.

5. Try to create the same ‘Christmassy’ atmosphere they’ve left behind when you get there – most properties will provide a tree, decorations, etc for Christmas guests.

6. Bring some CDs of Christmas songs along for the journey to keep the festive spirit going en route.

7. Check out the local Christmas markets or plan to visit a theme park that opens during the holiday season. Train rides, tours of lights and visits to see Santa are some of the things you can expect to find no matter where you go on baby friendly holidays at Christmas.

8. Pack a small bag of supplies for your tots to make decorations for your holiday home. Or pop to the local supermarket on arrival to stock up on the makings of some batches of Christmas biscuits!)

9. Before your trip, read about how children celebrate Christmas in other places. You can perhaps introduce some new traditions during your child friendly holidays, to take home with you for future Christmases.

10. Enjoy the relaxation that being away from your home environment brings – no running around visiting family, no shopping in the sales, no ‘let’s use the time off to decorate the spare room’ – just chill out and enjoy time as a family!

Is crafts something that you do with your children? Learn the correct way to give kids crafts

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

The concept that kids crafts is, or should be beneficial for children is not a new one. Traditional educators have long touted the direction following and fine motor development skills that arts and crafts gives to children.

The bottom line is however, that these type of crafts have not been proven to be any good at teaching direction followng. As a matter of fact, crafts like this does great damage to children’s self esteem and other skills.

Many of us already know why we as parents and educators like to give children arts and crafts.

We are spending special time with our children doing things they love.
It gives the children an outlet for their creativity.
It keeps them engaged.
It gives teachers a way to have children remember things they learned.
Helps the kids connect with different holidays.

Believe it or not, there’s a great way of doing crafts that picks up the level a notch or two. It is a method of doing arts and crafts with children that raises their confidence and self-esteem, gives them thinking and problem solving skills and skyrockets their creativity.

I call this, Educational arts and crafts.

There are a few very basic underlying concepts about educational arts and crafts.

All adults working with children should be aware of what children are capable of at various ages and levels.
Therfor, kids measuring sticks cannot be the same ones used by adults. Educators that know about child development know that kids do not reach adults understanding, so they don’t expect them to create like adults.
•    Having children copy an adult’s idea or model is not beneficial but detrimental for many reasons.

Good arts and crafts project should therefor, address the following points.

1.    The projects should help the children develop a good self-esteem.
2.Art or crafts are great venues for kids to use their thinking and problem solving skills.
3.    Choices should be available which leads to initiative taking.
4.    Freedom to decide HOW to decorate helps develop a sense of autonomy and independence.
5.    Creativity skyrockets when children decide what to create.

In Educational Arts and Crafts the children incorporate all of the above skills while traditional, copycat, arts and undermines the same.

The meaning of educational is not only fact accumulation and in this case, it certainly does not mean that kids are gathering fact while doing art. It means that they are receiving skills of tremendous educational benefit.

Children who do lots of copying adults crafts, end up feeling poorly about themselves and even more about their artistic abilities. They are usually the children who grow into the adults who feel “they cannot draw a straight line”.

They feel that there is no faith in them from the adults to make art on their own. Little by little their confidence gets ruined which is what happens if they are expected to only follow robotic adult directions. This all starts in the beiginning when giviing toddler crafts to young ones and continues on into the later years.

Below are some of the many terrific benefits inherent in educational art.

    Children feel great about themselves as they get to create their own projects.
The craft actually looks like something to the adult and the child.
Creativity is greatly sparked in the kids.
    Thinking, problem solving skills and initiative are used.
    Self-esteem and initiative are encouraged which spills over into other areas.

So why not get started in giving the children crafts that they do on their own, that are educational and stop giving your kids crafts that copy other adults work. You can check out some educational arts and crafts for kids in an e book form that closely follows this method.

4 Things to Know When Getting Children Toys

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Kids under 2 seem to discover new things with every passing moment. With new things at every nook and corner of the house, they remain pretty intrigued and busy throughout the day may it be a drawer full of utensils or a wardrobe door.  The toys often fail to engage them for long term but this does not mean that they are of no value. The items in the house are not challenging enough to contribute to the toddler’s overall development in the long run.

Toy websites have so much to choose from that we are often confused on what the the actual benefits any toy will offer. So, here are some tips on how to choose the right toys for your child.

Safety

A major element in buying gifts for children is Safety. The toys should not have any sharp corners or very small detachable parts. It is important that you find toys that you know that what it is made out of is non toxic and if it happens to be painted that it doesn’t have lead paint. Since children love to throw their toys or whatever they have for that matter, keep this in mind when getting them toys. It must be durable and it helps to be soft but this is more for the parents safety than for the child. melissa and doug toys are known for their adherence to safety guidelines. You can purchase them online from stores like Great Kid Gifts.

Engaging

Communication skills of toddlers are at the developing stage so you must buy such toys that promote ‘interactivity’. Toy phones, talk-back toys, and plush toys get the children to talk and react. You can get involved in pretend conversations and role playing activities that help them develop different social skills.

Manipulation

Handling toys is one of the best way to promote gross motor skills like grasping, maneuvering, tossing and better hand eye coordination. Toddlers are delighted to play with a ball to do this. They like to kick it, toss it and catch it. Ball promotes the physical activity as well which is a must for good health of the child. Building blocks, stacking rings, nesting toys all help in developing better manipulative skills. Toys that work on small muscles are also very helpful like pushing a button or lever, bulding block toys, dials or handles or stroking the toy hammers.

Art

This is the best time to encourage creativity in children. So buy colored pens or crayons and paper and hand it over to them for complete enjoyment. Books also inspire them to be imaginative and creative like story books. Although they cannot read, they love to turn the pages so buy cardboard books for them whose pages cannot be torn.

Getting gifts for toddlers requires you to keep in mind the developmental lessons the toys offer and the capabilities and interests of your child. A toy that enhances imagination and sparks adventure along with being within the appropriate age range for your child. Keep in mind these items and buy toys that nurture the young minds positively.
