The Hazards of Children’s Toys

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Ensuring children have safe toys is a concern that many parents have. Their fears are not completely irrational either, as many children have been harmed by dangerous toys before, although accident numbers are falling after more stringent toy regulations have come into force. However, parents still need to be careful and below we highlight some of the important things to look out for to ensure toys are safe.

Sharp edges. It is imperative that toys do not have sharp edges, even if they are made from seemingly soft materials. As children frequently run with their toys and play with them in a rough manner, picking up a cut or a jab from a sharp-edged toy is very easy.

Small parts. It is generally common knowledge that children and small parts do not mix well. Because of their inquisitive nature, children often put small things in their mouth and can sometimes swallow or even choke on them. Some toys might appear to have no small parts but because they are made from poor quality materials, parts easily break off and pose an equal risk.

Chemicals. Whether it is dangerous chemicals in plastics, harmful fluids in toys, or simply toxins in the paint that they are decorated with, kids can be seriously harmed by inconsiderate materials. Thankfully most toys are tested thouroughly for dangerous chemicals, but some will always slip though the net.

Mechanical Hazards. Some toys might not seem dangerous at first glance but their pure functioning poses a risk to children. Good examples of this are toys that have springs or elastic band actions that can release unexpectedly and can potentially harm the eyes. Also a toy might have a hinge or shutter that children can get fingers trapped in for example.

All toys and Christmas gifts should comply with the health and safety regulations of their respective countries, so next time you’re buying gifts for her or him look out for the endorsement logos on the toy’s label first.

Christmas, it’s meant to be the time of year where you can relax and spend time with your family. However, it very often isn’t. The day itself is ok, however, the build up to that day is what I’m talking about, that’s where the stress can really kick in.

The absolute worst thing about Christmas is having to shop for gifts, having to pick out something for your family. Once you’ve managed to find something that they won’t like, you still have to wait in line to actually buy them. All of this process has to be done while be pushed and shoved by people in a rush, trying to get their gifts faster than anyone else. That is the reason why so many thousand people will choose to do their shopping online.

Despite alleviating some of the stress of Christmas shopping by buying things online, you still have to find things to buy for your family. Over the past few years, the popularity of gadgets has grown and this is really one of the best things you can choose to buy.

Not Making Toys Like They Used To

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Call me old fashioned, but toys are not built as well as they used to be. Back in the day, a good toy used to last you well into adulthood, and would never go wrong. You could drop your wooden toy car from the top of a multi-story car park and the most damage it would receive would be a few minor scratches to the paint work. If you drop one of these modern toys, then you shouldn’t expect to be able to use it afterward. There will be so many broken parts that even an avid model builder would have a hard time putting it back together.

Some people might suggest that today’s toys are more advanced and have more technical pieces to go wrong. This is a pretty lousy argument however as there are some toys that are just as simple these days, and yet they still fall apart. Also, think back to when got old train sets as gifts, and the intricacies involved with the small parts and mechanics. These things were as hard as nails. You could make the trains have a head on collision at full speed and they just bounced off each other and kept on going.

So how come toys are not being made the standard that they once were? Well, as you might expect it comes down to money. There are still some toy makers and distributors that provide good quality products, but they are sadly in the minority these days and most companies are more concerned with getting high volume of products, for low cost and built from rubbish materials.

The answer? If you’re buying for a girl, hunt around for the best gifts for women on trusted websites, where you know you’ll get quality. When buying gifts for men you’re more advised to actually go to a shop to take a look at the build quality. Boys like to test their toys to breaking point, so finding a toy that can take a pounding is imperative
